Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, ‘That’s What’s Up’

I have been listening to this song on repeat for the past two days straight. It makes me want to wiggle around on the street.  Maybe like a dancing fish.

I felt a little conflicted about posting it after seeing their concert at Roseland last Wednesday – quite frankly, one of the absolute worst concerts I have ever been to.  The band seemed tired, and Alexander, the lead singer, was off in a very serious la-la land, and not in a cute way.  In the spirit of forgiveness, and their awesome performances at the past two concerts of theirs I’ve been to, I give you ‘That’s What’s Up,” off their new album Here dropping at the end of the month.

Mr. Ebert, I do not have a crush on you anymore.  But I like your stuff.

Truth – Alexander Ebert

I have to admit to having a bit of a crush on the magnificently charismatic, somewhat dirty, slightly New Age-y Alexander Ebert of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros fame.  I spent the summer listening to a death spiral of Bon Iver and Alexander (his side project…with pretty much exactly the same members as ES & MZ), and was thoroughly sick of all of it by summer’s end. A small break, and some newly crisp weather later, this is again just the song I want to be listening to.

Sidenote:  I’ve seen him in concert a few times, and I think one of the best things about him is that he seems so intent on sharing the spotlight with his fellow band members.  He is far and away the most interesting person, and questionably the most talented person on stage, but he really pushes some of the quieter members to showcase their new work.  Isn’t that sweet?  Crush.
