People Are So Fucking Cool

.

Let me see if I can say this clearly.  It’s amazing to see people whose default settings for success, resilience, and grace in the face of adversity are so effortlessly higher than the rest of us goons.  Chad Jones is a rock star.  So’s this guy.

Thanks, Hairpin!

“I had to take responsibility for my own ability to be creative and make stuff, and I wasn’t going to just wait around until someone told me I could.”

.

Like there needed to be yet another reason to crush on Joseph Gordon Levitt.

“Don’t just get involved. Fight for your seat at the table. Better yet, fight for a seat at the head of the table.”

I mean, I know giving speeches is part of his job description, but it’s nice seeing glimpses of the guy we put into office.

Read the rest of President Obama’s commencement speech at Barnard, right here.  It’s good for you.

(Thanks, C.)

Martin Creed ‘Thinking / Not Thinking’

My fashion-attuned friend Crystal passed along a video art playlist from V Magazine that she’s been involved with.  My favorite by far is this amazing little video and song by Martin Creed.  Funny, weird, spare, charming, and and so much like life.

Enjoy!  And laugh, at least a little.  =)

.

(Slightly random: Looking at Creed’s body of work just reminded me of this Simon Sinek talk about how it’s not what you do that matters, it’s why.  Ta da.)

Happy 2012! (and a poem)

Hello, hello, fellow citizens.  Hope everyone had a lovely New Year’s Eve!  I had very lazy plans to be inside before dark, but ended up having some drinks and a very tasty dinner at Hakata Tonton with a friend, which is definitely not a bad thing to end up doing. In the new year, I don’t have any words of wisdom for you, but I do have someone else’s. Enjoy!

Wild Geese

You do not have to be good

You do not have to walk on your knees

For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.

You only have to let the soft animal of your body

love what it loves.

Tell me about your despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.

Meanwhile the world goes on.

Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain

are moving across the landscapes,

over the prairies and the deep trees,

the mountains and the rivers.

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,

are heading home again.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,

the world offers itself to your imagination,

calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting –

over and over announcing your place

in the family of things.
